DELF-DALF
The DELF and DALF are diplomas awarded by the French Ministry of Education to prove the French-language skills of non-French candidates.
There are six independent diplomas, which correspond, respectively, to the six levels of the Council of Europe’ s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).

Diplôme d’études en langue française
Public: adults
Levels evaluated: A1 to B2
DELF (Diplôme d’Etudes en Langue Française) and DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française) are official qualifications awarded by the French Ministry of Education to certify the competency of candidates from outside France in the French language. DELF is composed of 4 independent diplomas that correspond to the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
The examinations can be taken in 1,186 approved examination centres in 173 countries, including France. The DELF and DALF qualifications are consistent with:
- international standards for test development (www.alte.org)
- the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (www.coe.int)
The 6 diplomas that make up DELF and DALF are completely independent. This means that candidates can register for the examination of their choice, according to their level.
At each level, 4 skills are evaluated: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
DELF Prim
Diplôme d’études en langue française
Public: children learning French as a Foreign Language at primary school (7 to 12 years old)
Levels evaluated: A1.1, A1, A2
DELF Prim is the first level in the DELF / DALF series of certificates awarded by the French Ministry of Education for proficiency in French as a Foreign Language.
DELF Prim is intended for children who are beginners in French as a Foreign Language and who are either undertaking studies corresponding to the French elementary level or are the right age to undertake such studies under the regulations applicable in their country. Successful candidates receive a certificate identical to the general public version.
DELF Prim is composed of individual certificates corresponding to the initial levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).
It assesses the four language skills:
- Listening comprehension
- Reading comprehension
- Speaking skills
- Writing skills
The tests are built on the same model as the DELF for adults, but with topics adapted to suit the age group in question.
DELF junior
Diplôme d’études en langue française
Public: preadolescent and adolescent candidates in secondary school (12 to 17 years old)
Levels evaluated: A1 to B2
The DELF junior is a diploma issued by the French Ministry of National Education in recognition of French-language studies. The tests are adapted to the teenage lifestyle and correspond to the interests of teens.
The DELF examinations are recognized around the world, and your child will receive a diploma valid for the rest of his or her life!
The DELF diplomas evaluate a student’s ability to communicate, both orally and verbally, with actual Francophones.
The DELF junior and DELF scolaire examinations assess students at four levels (A1, A2, B1, B2), which correspond to the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Diplôme d’études en langue française
ELF and DALF have been consistent with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages since 1 September 2005
Since 1 September 2005, the National Commission for DELF and DALF has been offering a version of DELF for teenagers in state and private schools.
Each diploma corresponds to one of the four lower levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. At each level, a series of examinations evaluates the four communication skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Special features
- The qualification awarded is the “Diplôme d’Etudes en Langue Française” [Diploma in French language studies]. There is no indication on the certificate of the fact that it was the DELF for schools that was taken.
- The structure of the examinations is the same as that of the standard version of DELF. Only the topics and the materials are different: these are adapted for schoolchildren.
General conditions
- The introduction of DELF for schools is subject to an agreement being signed by the local education authorities and the French embassy.
- DELF for schools is open to all young people of nationalities other than French who attend a school authorised to offer it as part of the abovementioned agreement.
- Examination sessions are organised in schools each year with the endorsement of the National Commission for DELF and DALF.
- Registration takes place in the schools.
- The fees are set by the Department for cooperation and cultural affairs (SCAC) of the French embassy in collaboration with the local education authorities.
DELF Pro
Diplôme d’études en langue française “option professionnelle”
Public: candidates seeking initial employment opportunities or promotion within a French-speaking work environment
Levels evaluated: A1 to B2
The DELF Pro (Order of 10 July 2009) is the professional version of the DELF national qualifications in French as a Foreign Language, administered by the French Ministry of Education.
The DELF Pro is designed for candidates seeking initial employment opportunities or promotion within a French-speaking work environment. All candidates are welcome to apply, whether in initial training or continuing education.
The DELF Pro assesses the communication skills needed for all aspects of professional life today. The examination topics are based on the world of work.
The DELF Pro comprises 4 self-standing qualifications, corresponding to the first four levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). There are no entry requirements: candidates can take the examination at the level of their choosing.
Each level of the examination assesses the four language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. A score of 50 out of 100 averaged across all four sections entitles the candidate to the DELF Pro Certificate A1, A2, B1 or B2.
DALF
Diplôme approfondi de langue française
Public: adults
Levels evaluated: C1 to C2
DELF (Diplôme d’Etudes en Langue Française) and DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française) are official qualifications awarded by the French Ministry of Education to certify the competency of candidates from outside France in the French language.
